I find it amazing how concerned people are about their data, when they have a crash or their computer is lost, stolen or damaged beyond repair. I’m a technology professional and my desktop experienced some issues where I have to do a fresh install of my OS and all of my settings. After I was completed, I had all my settings back to where things were before my software/hardware failure. What allowed me to do this? Having a backup of no just my data, but software settings and profiles.

You never now how vital you data was, until you lose it. Well, the only thing that I lost was the time it took to make repairs, the data, I still have. Many users will prefer to use Firefox over other browsers. Make sure you add your Firefox directory to your backup scheme. You should also take the time to note where your profiles and settings are located for many of your software installations. The location C:\Documents and Settings\”USER NAME”\ Application Data\ is another important path you should take note of. When you need to restore your settings to much of the software on your system, you will find it here.

As technology becomes more and more apart of our daily lives, we depend on it even more. Our banking, our passwords, our music and pictures are all stored on our computers. Why not back it up? It will cost much more to have someone retrieve the data (if its possible). You can back up you data, but what if you have a flood or even worse a fire? Banks and other large institutions don’t have the monopoly on protecting data. Sure, your can backup your data at home, you can also store it, securely off site and have 24/76 access to it. As technology gets more advanced, you will yet have people doing things the outdated way. Who needs to do things the new way, when the old way works just fine? You might have too! What do I mean? The old fashioned way may actually compromise your data. The reason things are updated is, developers and programmers found out their flaws and vulnerabilities in their software. Upgrades are they way to fix and repair, exploits, weakness and other problems in a program that may have been secure back then.

It only takes a few moments of your time, perhaps 30 minutes at the most, to make sure your data is protected and secure. Its much more expensive and time consuming to try and recover it without any protection methods in place. You can take your chances if you desire, no one is immune for a software glitch or hardware failure, you just have to be prepared for it when it happens and the operative word is when. For backups , checkout the services offered by Connectivity Pro, Online File Folders; your data is safe and secure. Accessible 24/7.

I guess many PC and laptop user don’t think it will happen to them. In 2011, maybe you should consider having you data accessible from another location, other than your PC or laptop.

In many cases, when you have a disaster on your desktop or laptop, the data can be recovered. Their are many services available that will charge you per MB or GB to recover your data. Its possible to spend only pennies a day to protect you self from a disaster. many computer manufactures will offer some type of built in service or feature that will allow you to recover from many pc problems, but what if your equipment is actually stolen or damaged beyond repair?

I switched from using Carbonite to a service called Online File Folder a service of Connectivity Pro. This service allows me to have between 10 and 100GB of secure storage of my data. I can back up my documents, my music and more. Also, I have access from any PC and I can install it on multiple PC’s.

Cloud storage is now, unfortunately many have not heard of it and they are more than likely using it and don’t know it.

Why play the game of chance with your data? SSD cards and thumb drive are still useful when it comes to transporting or sharing data. However, there is a much better way to store your valuable data, that using memory cards and thumb drives. Why? Memory cards fail and they are prone to static electricity. In many cases, you can insert your memory card or thumb drive into a computer and possibly damage it. Cloud storage is really taking off as a must for many businesses. You no longer have to store your data on a card or memory stick, send it to your storage space in the cloud.

So, what are some don’t s when it comes to storing your data? Here they are:

Don’t rely on memory cards and thumb drives only, to store your data. The reasons why are obvious. They get lost, corrupted and damaged. If your information is private and your device is lost, you face the embarrassment of contact your customers and explaining yourself.

Don’t neglect backing up your data. And most important, check to make sure its being backed up!

Don’t delete a thing. Unless you’re positively sure you don’t need it. Storage is so inexpensive, you can have Terabytes of storage at your disposal at the cost of pennies a day.

Don’t carry your memory card in your wallet, your pocket or handle them while walking across surfaces that generate static electricity. Use these devices with care, store them in a safe place or in some type of case or holder.

There are many options to storing your data, in my opinion, cloud storage is a safe option.
