Having a tablet device gives your the convenience and flexibility to perform many tasks you would on your laptop. For the road warrior the Ipad or any tablet device is a welcome device to tote around without the weight. What cant not do on a tablet device is properly, effectively build out a website. I’m a web developer and the ability to do some website updates or crank out a quick web form is tedious from such a small device.

Although I have a laptop with the processing powers and enough working space on the screen, I wont carry it anywhere because of the weight. Eventually I will upgrade it to a Mac Book, something extremely lightweight and powerful. Will I keep my Ipad? Yes, it has its uses, but It wont replace a laptop for me.

Protecting the screen of your new device should be priority when you first buy it. Get a screen protector and you will have less worry when it comes to you or someone else scratching your screen. There are plenty of choices to choose from, since I believe you get what you pay for, I have no problem in spending a little money to protect my investment. I cringe when I show someone my iPad and they point to and touch my screen with their finger nail…and then tap the screen, trust me get a screen protector.

After you’ve taken the necessary steps to protect your screen, you can now focus on the proper way to clean it and keep it clean the dust and smudges under control. Many screen protectors on the market are made to show less smudge and will minimize the blinding glare from the sun and bright lighting. When it comes to clean, think “microfiber” – Invest in or use a good microfiber cloth to clean your screen and use a little water or an approved screen cleaning solution (made for electronics) to clean your screen.

I need only clean / wipe down my iPad screen every other day since I’m the only user. There are little to no unsightly smudges too. Do not scrub your screen, use some care and apply light pressure when cleaning it, the microfiber cloth will do the work of removing the dust and oil from the screen.

Here are some don’ts, when cleaning your iPad screen:

  • Do not use solvents or harsh cleaners, not even window cleaner. If you insist on using an alcohol based cleaner, again, use an approved one.
  • Do not press down hard your screen as if you are scrubbing it.
  • Do not press down hard on the cleaning cloth using your thumb nail or any object to remove a stubborn spot, you stand the chance of creasing your screen and maybe causing damage to it.
  • Make sure there are no particles (sand, grit, dust, sugar or salt) underneath the cleaning cloth, you stand the chance of scratching your screen. This is why you should apply a screen protector to your device after purchase.

Remember, using a microfiber cloth is ideal. Using a soft, lint free cloth is acceptable. When it comes to using cleaners, only use approved cleaners and apply light pressure when wiping the screen. The screen of the iPad is the way you will interface with your device and taking care of it will brings you years of productive use.

Many articles are written about the iPad and yet, many people have questions before they make or justify the investment. Recently, one of my customers asked me did I own the device, When I answered yes, being relieved that she could get first hand information from someone using the product she had plenty of questions. I guess, getting information from a user of the device that you know, is better than getting it from a sales person. What’s it really like to own an iPad? Why did I buy It? Is it worthy the investment?

Why Did I buy It?

I bought the iPad because I saw the opportunity to free myself from carrying a laptop. Don’t get me wrong, I still own a laptop. I wanted the ability to be truly mobile with my business. The device is a suitably medium between my laptop and my iPhone. What do I mean? The iPhone is great for sending text messages, email and some minor web surfing when I’m away from the desk or I can’t bring or use a desktop or laptop at the moment. The iPad is better. I can do more faster and conveniently. Like What?

  • Send and reply to many emails, without carefully typing on a tiny iPhone keypad.
  • I can do banking and bill paying.
  • I can process credit card payments.
  • I can give a Powerpoint presentations, edit word documents, read pdf files and much more!

The iPad simply frees me from my desk while at home and work. I can remote into desktops and servers at or away from work. When I need the computing power of a desktop (while away from the office or home) this is when I use my laptop., When I’m at home and I don’t want to be at my desk and I need to edit or create a web site, I use my laptop. When I want o simply surf the web, write some articles (like this one), send emails, check web site stats, read articles, listen to music while surfing the web, I will use my iPad.

Is It worth the investment?

I can say “I get my monies worth and more out of this device”. I have no regrets. I use it everyday and it allows me to literally manage my business, my customers and personal life on the go.

Whats it really like to own an iPad?

It’s the next best thing as compared to have a new laptop, It’s highly portable, great battery life and a welcome convenience to have and use. I had many situations where, pulling out my laptop, booting up and launching an application was not practical. With the iPad, I take it out, turn it on and do what I need to fast!

The start of 2010 was an exciting time for technology enthusiast everywhere. Many were in anticipation for the iPad and the freedom is would bring from the now cumbersome and heavy laptop and the desktop. Although is device is not a replacement for the laptop or desktop, it allows users some real flexibility to compute, work email and surf the net in ways that laptops users find inconvenient.

Is the Apple iPad right for you? That depends on what you want to do. I am a systems administrator, my job requires that I be able to remote into our servers from time to time and provide remote support to users. Yes, I can do this with a laptop, but this device allows me to do this while away from my desk and is more flexible and convenient. The battery life is great and I don’t need to lug around a laptop, looking for a power outlet or carry a spare battery.

When I’m not working at my day job, I develop websites, blogs and provide remote support for all my customers. My iPad, allows me to stay in touch with my customers via email or instant messenger and I can do all of my billing from my iPad.

Did this device replace my laptop?

No. I still use my laptop when I’m at home and I don’t want to be in front of my desktop. My laptop gives me the computing power of my desktop to do those more CPU intensive jobs. Users will always need more power. At one time or another, everyone who owns a laptop, has taken it with them to bed, trying to finish a document, read an online article or watch a movie. The laptop gets hot, it gets in the way and you need to plug it up. When your all done, you unplug it and place it in a safe place so you wont knock it off the night stand. The iPad is the perfect device to carry with you to bed. It’s small enough, light enough and it’s not hot hold in your lap. You can surf, read a book, watch a movie, pay bills and do most things you would do with your laptop.

I like the idea of being able to have this device with me and use it anywhere. It’s much better than having a laptop that takes up much table and lap space. I once owned a Kindle, I sold it and I still have access to all my books and I can still make Kindle Book purchases and have them sent to my iPad. Do I regret my investment in this device? No. In fact, when the newer model comes out in 2011, I’ll upgrade. I definitely get my monies worth from the iPad. Is this device for you? That depends on what you want to do with it.
