Foot problems are one of the commonly developed symptoms of diabetics that become serious very fast. Unless the problems are recognized early and treated in time, they can cause serious complications starting from heel pain to nerve damage. Although diabetic foot care treatments have improved to a large extent, preventing the problems before they occur is the best option. So, it is crucial for people with diabetes to know about the diabetes foot care procedures to keep their foot from severe problems.

Make it a routine to check your feet everyday. Inspect if there is a cut, swelling, redness, blister or any kind of nail problem. If required, use a mirror to check both your feet. In case you find any problem, go for the appropriate treatment procedure. But don’t try to handle major problems like corns or ingrown nails. Rather, meet your physician immediately.

Keep your feet clean. Wash your feet with lukewarm water (ensure that the water is not too hot to cause burn). Use of soapy water is advisable but after consulting your doctor. While bathing the feet use only soft washcloth or sponge to clean gently. Even while drying the feet dry properly by patting or blotting. Make sure you dry between the toes for a complete diabetic foot care.

Dry skin of feet tends to cracking or itching. So don’t forget to use a good quality moisturizer after patting your feet dry. Don’t apply the moisturizer between the toes, it may cause fungal infections. However, if you pick the moisturizer that has anti bacterial elements it will have better effect. It’s better to use a lotion recommended by your doctor.

A special care should be taken while cutting the toe nails. Cut the nail straight across. And if required, file the edges. Cutting the nail too short may cause ingrown nails.

Socks are one of the most important considerations for diabetic foot care. Make sure your socks are clean and dry. Change your socks everyday. Don’t go for the ones that are tight and with elastic bands as they reduce blood circulations. Even the thick and bulky of socks are not the right choice. As far as possible choose therapeutic footwear. If you feel cold at night, you can also wear socks to bed instead of using hot water bottle or heating pad.

It is recommended not to go bare foot. However, selecting the right kind of shoes is also important for proper foot care. Heel pain is the common problem that results from uncomfortable footwear. Shake the shoes out to ensure no foreign particles inside before you step into the shoes. Diabetic foot care also includes protecting your feet from the tiny pebbles, snow, rain, etc.

You can also shun many problems simply by avoiding smoking.

A regular check-up of your foot will prevent many serious foot problems caused due to diabetes.

The above diabetic foot care procedures are easy, but one has to follow them regularly to get maximum benefit.

It can even cause problems for your feet. How can this happen?

This disease, accurately named diabetes mellitus, is a chronic disorder that is characterized by high blood glucose levels. High sugar levels in the blood can result in tissue and organ damage. Diabetes mellitus is caused by faulty insulin, no insulin, fewer amount of insulin, or changes in the body’s reaction to this hormone. Insulin breaks down blood glucose so that it can be used by the body for energy.

The pancreas produces insulin, and diabetes mellitus can be subdivided into two principle types. Persons suffering from Type 1 diabetes have defective insulin producing cells, so that the body cannot produce the hormone, or can produce only very low levels of it. On the other hand, people suffering from Type 2 diabetes have resistant body tissues, and will often have a different, more extensive treatment and maintenance regimen. People with diabetes have to eat special diets, avoid certain foods, and take medication that can allow them to maintain good blood insulin levels.

Foot Care

People suffering from diabetes mellitus will often have a hard time maintaining their feet, because diabetes can damage the nerves leading to the feet. Diabetes can also impede blood circulation, especially to the extremities, including the feet. Because of impeded circulation, the feet can be prone to more infections, especially since the immune system will have a hard time targeting infectious agents entering through the feet. People with diabetes will often complain about having stiffer joints, wounds that heal slower, and decreased speed of blood clotting.

Because of these effects of diabetes on the feet, much more extensive damage can occur. For instance, because of extensive nerve damage, a person with diabetes might have wounds or broken bones in his or her feet, and he or she might not know it. He or she will not be able to administer good antibiotics or ointments to help the wound heal. For that matter, impeded circulation can also keep the wounds in the feet from healing properly, so that people with diabetes can also have foot ulcers. By the time they detect such ulcers, it is too late to heal the wounds by simply applying ointments, and amputation may have to be carried out.

If you are diagnosed with diabetes, then you have to have a good foot cleaning and maintenance regimen in order to avoid infections. Foot care for Diabetes Mellitus involves the following. First, take care that you wash your feet every day, using some mild soap and warm water. Lather your feet well and clean the areas between the toes and on your heel. When you are done, rinse your feet well and dry each part of your foot carefully. If you are wearing closed shoes, use talcum or foot powder to dust your foot and keep moisture out. Be sure, however, to apply only a little powder, and take care not to leave powder to cake in between your toes.

Look at each part of your foot each day, and inspect its bottom using a mirror. Look for sores, bruises, cuts, or changes in toenail color. Look for swelling that might be indicative of pus formation. Do not open sores or drain pus on your own. You need a licensed caregiver to do this so that you do not increase your risk of infection. To supplement your foot care, practice good, healthy habits: quit smoking, exercise regularly, and avoid drinking alcohol.

Care for your feet regularly and make sure that they are always well groomed. When cutting toenails, make sure that you cut across the top, and never force your nail cutter into the corners of your toes. When you encounter sharp angles on your feet, use a good emery board or nail file to smoothen your nail out. You want to avoid cutting your foot with your own toenails. Avoid walking around barefoot, and always wash your feet if you step into dirty soil or mud.

When buying shoes, shop in the afternoon when your foot is relatively larger, and buy a shoe that fits your feet exactly. You need comfortable shoes that will not hurt your feet, cut into your toes, or damage the skin of your feet or legs. You need to give your toes a good amount of room to move and wriggle. As much as possible, avoid buying high heels, pointed or narrow toes, or hard shoes that can tax on your bones.

Visit a podiatrist, or foot specialist, at least once a year; and consult with your doctor regularly. Do as much research as you can on foot care for Diabetes Mellitus. Although foot care might seem inconsequential compared with a good diet and proper medication, it should help you deal with diabetes better and still look and feel better both inside and out.

The endorsers of these products aim to promote the line of products not only for athletes but also for all groups of people. Educating the public with series of educational and interactive activities on the proper foot care is also one of the goals of the endorsers.

There are various Dr Scholls foot care products available for every condition. Among the possible conditions treated by these products include arch pain, athlete’s foot, back pain, bunions, calluses, corns, heel pain, knee pain, foot odor and perspiration, nail problems such as nail fungus, ingrown toenails, rough and dry skin, shoe rubbing and friction, tired and aching feet and many more.

Arch pain normally occurs during walking. It is a common bio-mechanical problem on the arch of the person as it collapses in the lead of weight bearing. The motion of the collapsing causes severe inflammation and stress on the plantar fascia. Possible extreme discomfort may also arise that can even lead to other foot problems. The recommended Dr Scholls foot care products for arch pain as well as back pain are in the form of massaging gels. These are use to relieve painful stress, fatigue and strain on the foot. For back pains, the gel can help aggravate the pain on the back muscles.

Dr Scholls foot care products for athlete’s foot may have several features that include prevention of all kinds of athlete’s foot, destroying of instant odor, and may come with anti-fungal ingredients.

Dr Scholls foot care products for bunions, calluses and corns are in the form of liquid, cushion foams, padding or cream remover. These products help remove the thickened areas of the dead and hard skin that cause pain as well when being pushed inside the live skin tissue. Foot care is important though and if we take care of our feet we will feel better all over as a result. Take foot massage for example, which includes stroking of the foot, ankle rotation, pivoting, and kneading. But why bother? Well for one thing it feels great, but there’s more to it than that as the anatomy of the foot is connected with the whole body, and it is for this reason that we can feel relaxed head to toe, by simply having our feet pampered.

I used to ignore my feet and as a consequence I’ve suffered a lifetime with bouts of athletes foot, toe fungus, verrucas, and chilblains. The crazy thing is that all of these foot conditions could have been easily avoided with a little foot care. Today, I treat my feet with great respect and they are unrecognizable compared to the unsightly stumps that used to get disregarded as an important part of my anatomy.

Unless you’re addicted to pain and discomfort, then I would say that it’s essential that one must take extra care of their feet in order to avoid having the kind of foot problems that I had. Nice looking feet in good condition DO get noticed despite being at ground level, and they do make you feel better as a person. Good foot care is not only about covering uncared-for feet with a nice pair of shoes, although correctly fitting footwear is also important.

What about you, are you taking good care of your feet? Most of the time so many of us focus on health or skin care completely ignoring the importance of our feet! Women in general take better care of their feet than men, but this is mainly due to women’s shoes, as so many of them are open styles, which means the feet are often visible.

As always, prevention is better than cure, and simple preventative measures such as keeping feet clean, applying lotions to stop them getting dry and chapped, scrubbing behind toenails and drying between the toes etc, are all quick and simple techniques that should be incorporated into your foot care regime if you want to avoid the common and not so common problems folks have with their feet.

The foot is actually quite a complicated part of the human body, although most of us take the feet for granted. The first and most basic part of foot care starts at a very young age and should be continued throughout your lifetime, and that means wearing the right kind of shoes. Poorly fitted shoes can not only damage your feet but can course other problems later on in life, so before you rush out and buy the latest hip footwear, you might just want to pause and ask yourself if the shoes in question are a). the perfect fit, and b). of good quality, breathable material.

There are many causes of foot pain, far too many to mention here, and some can be quite serious too, but quite often so many of these complaints are as a direct result of lack of care, and that includes toe nails as well as the foot itself.

Be good to yourself, be good to your feet, and you will surely reap the rewards in the long term. Remember, Good foot care is really necessary for healthy pain free feet.

Knowledge Is The Key

When you were first diagnosed with diabetes, were you given instruction on how to take care of your feet on a daily basis? Chances are that you were given limited information in this very important area. The most common reason is because you and your health care professional were mainly focused on getting your blood sugar down to an acceptable range. I am a health care professional working in the diabetes education field and foot care is one area that I really stress when I talk to my clients with diabetes.

Why?

Because I have seen the damaging effects of poor foot care. These damaging effects include chronic foot ulcers that can lead to disability and in some cases, amputation.

My goal is to educate as many people as I can about how to care for your feet. The more you know about foot care, the less chance you will have in developing foot ulcers now and in the future.

Let’s start with daily care.

One of the things that are important in diabetes foot care is that you have to do it on a daily basis. Whether it is when you first get up in the morning to take a bath or shower or whether it is in the evening. The important thing is that you need to do this EVERY DAY. Very much the same way that you are checking your blood sugar every day. It needs to become part of your daily routine.

Your Daily Foot Care Routine.

1. Wash your feet in warm (never hot) water, using a mild non-perfumed soap If you have diminished sensation in your hands and feet, you can use your elbow to test the temperature of the water or you can go out and get a bath thermometer. Never soak your feet, as this can dry your skin making it prone to crack.

2. While your feet are still wet, use a pumice stone to keep calluses under control making sure you don’t rub too hard.

3. Dry your feet carefully, especially between your toes. Some people whose feet perspire find comfort in applying a little powder in between the toes.

4. Thoroughly check your feet and between your toes on a daily basis to make sure there are no cuts, cracks, ingrown toenails, blisters, etc. If you are unable to easily inspect your feet, use a hand held mirror to see the bottom of your feet. If you are still having difficulty, ask someone else to check them for you.

5. Always clean cuts or scratches with mild soap and water, and cover with a dry dressing suitable for sensitive skin.

6. Trim your toenails straight across and file any sharp edges. Don’t cut the nails too short.

7. Apply lotion to your heels and soles, preferably lotion that does not have perfume in it. Wipe off any excess lotion that is not absorbed. Don’t put lotion between your toes, as the excessive moisture can promote infection.

8. Wear fresh clean socks and well-fitting shoes every day

I cannot stress it enough; your daily foot care routine along with managing your blood sugar will significantly make a difference between having a good quality of life vs. living with disability. Here are some other guidelines to ensure that your feet remain healthy. I call this my Do’s and Don’ts list.

Foot Care Do’s And Don’ts

Do wear well-fitting shoes. The shoes should be supportive, have low heels (less than 5 cm high) and should not rub or pinch your feet. It is a good idea to shop at a reputable store with knowledgeable staff that can professionally fit your shoes.

Do wear loose socks at night if your feet get cold.

Do elevate your feet when you are sitting.

Do wiggle your toes and move your ankles around for a few minutes several times a day.

Do exercise regularly to improve foot and leg circulation.

Do inspect your feet daily and in particular check for skin temperature differences between your feet.

Don’t wear high heels, pointed-toe shoes, sandals (open toe or open heel) or worn-out shoes.

Don’t wear anything tight around your legs, such as tight socks or knee-highs.

Don’t go barefoot, even indoors. Even if this means buying a pair of shoes for indoors and another pair for outdoors.

Don’t put hot water bottles or heating pads on your feet.

Don’t cross your legs for long periods of time.

Don’t smoke.

Don’t have pedicures by non-healthcare professionals.

I hope that this article has been informative and has provided you with good guidelines to take care of your feet. If you take these guidelines and use them on a daily basis, my goal will have been accomplished and you will have been given the opportunity to live your life to the fullest.
