With the amount of pollution from the high number of cars on today’s roads, car engine air filters get dirty quickly and restrict air to the engine. For the motorist, this means poor fuel economy and engine performance. Depending on how dirty the air filter is, it may be that it does not need to be replaced but just needs a simple clean with a shot of compressed air to blow off debris.

If the air filter is significantly stained with oily pollutants, ripped or damaged, it is recommended that the air filter be replaced. Air filters on most engines today are located inside an air-tight sealed plastic box which is secured by either clips or screws.

Remove Air Filter

To remove the air filter for inspection, locate the air filter box and remove the cover.

Inspect Filter Condition

Carefully inspect the air filter material for signs of damage such as rips, tears or moisture damage. The air filter should be completely dry and intact.

Cleaning the filter

If the filter just looks dusty, it can be cleaned by either using a vaccum cleaner or compressed air.

Fitting a new filter

Replace with a new filter if there are any signs of damage as this may allow dirt to enter your engine and may cause damage, leaving you with high repair bills. Push the new replacement air filter firmly into place to ensure the rubber rim around the filter forms an air-tight seal when the air box lid is fitted and secured. Now fit the lid of the box into place and secure either with screws or clips, whichever applies.
