The workplace is is just as diverse as the Internet, when online one can visit site located in different countries and experience a different culture without leaving their present location. Often times I encounter a small business owner who launched a website with the idea of selling to an online consumer base; not realizing their business is actual global and accessibly to anybody, anywhere.

When a company decides to do business locally they are careful to produce advertisements that are in good taste and generally excepted by all. For instance, parents may find it offensive and in poor taste if a clothing company makes revealing clothing for little girls or a toy company making realistic toy guns for little boys. When a staffing company takes on a new contract worker, they often send out key chains, coffee mugs or other trinkets as a way to welcome or show company pride or generate referrals.

There are many things to consider when your company hands out promotional materials, designed to generate referrals. Advertising should be in good taste ,considering the many ethnicities that may view your ad and possibly find it offensive. What about the cow, the fish and the pig? I’m getting to that. Back in 1984, Pepsi was asked to remove an ad that was found offensive in India. The ad depicting a child was seen as violating child labor laws in India. It looks like the advertising firm who came up with the ad, didn’t do their research.

A friend on mine was recently hired by a staffing company and the company sent him some promotional materials or trinkets. Foamy little figurines in then form of a cow, a pig and a fish. He thought about sharing one of the figurines with another co worker…who was from India and a practicing Hindu. The possibility of an insult and being offensive to someone was immanent. You see, the cow is something sacred in India and many other animals are seen as divinities and also as incarnations or aspects of Vishnu or Siva.

So, as diverse as workplaces are, the pool of job applicants is just as diverse and companies need to do their research and consider the whom they are reaching out to.

The work place is full of diversity. Different cultures and ethnicities working together to carry out many tasks during the business day. Well, maybe some are working together. Some managers and employees do not handle stress and change very well. Some of the many stressful events in the work place come from coworkers who seem to lack the self control to keep their frustrations to themselves. What do I mean? Many places of employment have their employees in cubicles, nothing is more disruptive to the work flow that a barrage of four-letter words expressing impatience over a slow computer.

When an employee who is focused on the task at hand is called over to another employees desk to assist with something and they are greeted with cursing and vented frustrations over spread sheet that is slow to open, is truly unprofessional and annoying. So how do you handle this when its been going on for weeks? In a calm manner, you simply say to them, “I’m here to help you, not listen to how frustrated you are about work”. What you say, really depends on the situation. The offender many or man not offer an apology.

What if the offender is you? What if you are the one whose temperament got the best of you on a Monday morning and you feel compelled to apologize? To ease tension in the workplace, which could have an affect productivity, you simply apologize. No one has the right to subject anyone to a barrage of four letter words aimed at the company with you on the receiving end. If you decide to send an email because your too embarrassed to do the mature adult thing (apologize in person), there are two things you should not include in your email and here they are:

  1. The word “IF”.

Starting your email with, “I apologize IF I have hurt your feelings”. is condescending. It’s not that you hurt someone feelings (and you probably did), you are simply not taking ownership over your lack of self-control and professionalism. Stating “If I have” is also insulting, of course what you did was wrong and you are showing that you are too proud to own up to it. This will cause you to lose the respect of the person whom you are apologizing to.

2. Don’t blame your actions on something else that’s been bothering you.

You are simply justifying your reasons for unloading on another coworker. Since you are going to exercise humility is writing an apology, do it the right way and swallow your pride.

If you want to gain the respect of your fellow coworker when you have wronged them, offer a sincere apology. No, this does not make you weak. If your wrong, the other party clearly knows it. You lose their respect when you try to trivialize the matter and cover it up. I’ll end with a personal experience.

When I was in the military, the rank of Staff Sergeant, I chewed out (yelled at and verbally insulted) a junior troop, in front of his peers, in order for him to see the seriousness of his slothfulness. I realized that I could have handled it better and my method was wrong. I went to the junior troop and apologized to him in front of his peers. He was surprises and said, “Staff Sergeant, you don’t have to apologize to me” I said, “yes, I do, I was wrong and should have been more professional”. That young Marine had a renewed respect for me (as a person) after the apology and he became one of my most reliable air crewmen, who I could count on to get a task done! Try being sincere in your apology.

Contrary to popular belief, Critical Thinking is not being critical and closed minded about opinions and thought. To my amazement, critical thinking was taboo in many religious circles because many people have never heard about it. I first learned about and was exposed to the concept of critical thinking in college, being surprised to learn that I was doing it most of my life, I embraced the practice of it even more. The organizational website, Critical Thinking, the word or concept of critical thinking is defined in this manner:

Critical thinking is that mode of thinking – about any subject, content,or problem – in which the thinker improves the quality of his or her thinking by skillfully analyzing, assessing, and reconstructing it. Critical thinking entails effective communication and problem-solving abilities, as well as a commitment to overcome our native egocentrism and sociocentrism.

Why is critical thinking important? It will help you make better, informed decisions. Everyday people, will make everyday errors in judgment because they fail to question, investigate, consider a source and formulate an opinion based on factual information. When it comes to making a business decision, you must have all the facts and answer the “what ifs” before you commit to an action. Why then do many people dismiss the thought of doing a through investigation or assemble factual information before making a decision or deciding that information is true? I believe its because of the following:

  • They give in to the pressure of pleasing the masses
  • They lack the discipline required to analyze the information they have
  • They are not skilled in asking the right questions

I think the majority of people use critical thinking at sometime during the day; following through and being consistent seems to be the problem. When I attend business seminars and the speaker is talking about how they made thousands of dollars in their first month and they share with the audience how they were able to leave their job, I analyze not only what they are saying, I look for the obvious. If you are trying to sell people on a money making venture, you have to look the part. What do i mean? How is the presenter dressed? Do they look successful and prosperous? Sure, the person might be frugal and not the flashy type, but consider this; would you be convinced of my success and what I’m selling, if I could not prove my success?

When someone approaches us about a program or a product that has unbelievable claims in doing something, we use critical thinking. We ask questions, we want to see proof of the claims made. Before we commit to a mode of thinking or before we accept information as factual and true, we analyze what is said, who said it, we consider the source; is the person credible? All this we do, before we arrive at a decision.

Critical thinking is something most people do on a daily basis. Before you make your next decision, ask yourself: Did I ask the right questions? Have I considered the creditability of my source(s)? Did I analyze the information that I have?
